The first few pages of the novel situate us in the landscape: ash, isolation, and a long road to travel. You could say the novel alternates between two settings: the road and excursions away from the road into houses or other possible food mother lodes.

Standing proud on Charing Cross Road, it covers a whopping five floors, with a staggering 4 miles worth of shelves holding over.   THIS BOOK is the fifth of Dominic Reeve’s to be published but the first in which he describes his early life, before he went on the road with a horse and wagon. In his other books he is already among Romanies, accompanied by his talented partner, the artist Beshlie, who has provided some excellent illustrations for this book.

  I n the old Romany tradition, you can only call yourself a true Romany Gypsy – one of the kaulo ratti, the black blood – if all your ancestors, as far as you know, are of the : Damian Le Bas. It's a great book of times gone by where the Romany Gypsy were welcomed as a regular annual visitor - much like the summer. We lived in a small village in Warwickshire near Twycross Zoo and my dad had a scrap yard, I had a spotted pony I used to ride round the village (you can guess what the villages thought of me).
